Wheelchair Basketball

A photo of seven people playing Wheelchair basketball at Iffley Road Sports Centre

Wheelchair basketball is a para-sport that was initially developed for people who use a wheelchair for mobility. It is similar in many ways to running basketball, with five players on court for each team, using the same court, hoop, and size 7 basketball as men’s basketball. There are rule adaptations around travelling with the ball and contact.

We are a non-competitive team who focus on skill development, and we are always happy to welcome new members, regardless of experience with either wheelchairs or basketballs.

We are the only dedicated adaptive sports team within the university and our membership a is mix of wheelchair users, other disabled people, people with injuries, and able-bodied people. We are open to OU students, Brookes students, university staff and adult community members. We support neurodivergent learning styles in our coaching and our team is open to those of all genders and none.

Sports wheelchairs are provided, and can be adapted to different body types, with a number of configurations for straps, seats, and footplates as needed. Unfortunately, the nature of the sport means that you do require (corrected to) normal vision and function in both arms, and the nature of our team means that we are very limited in the support we can provide for cognitive impairments.

The Wheelchair Basketball team makes up part of the Basketball Club, which has five teams competing in the British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) championships and national competitions : Mens Blues, Womens Blues, Mens Twos and Womens Twos in addition to the Wheelchair Basketball Team.

Sessions run at the Iffley Road Sports Centre, which provides accessible toilets and showers. Parking (blue badge and non-blue badge) is also available. Carers and support workers are welcome, and there is no extra membership cost for their participation.
