Octopush is underwater hockey and is a supreme aerobic game. It was invented in the early 1950s by sub-aqua divers in Southsea who got bored just swimming up and down pool lanes to get fit. The game is now played worldwide. Octopush is inclusive to all genders and levels of experience, and we welcome enquiries from those with a disability regarding the accessibility of Octopush.

Underwater hockey (a.k.a. Octopush) is a supreme aerobic game, in which two teams use short hockey sticks to manoeuvre a puck along the bottom of the pool, with the help of masks, snorkels and flippers! It was invented in the early 1950s by Southsea Sub-Aqua Club, who wanted to keep their members fit and enthusiastic over the cold winter months when diving opportunities were limited, and it is now played worldwide at a professional level. Oxford University Underwater Hockey Club is a friendly, informal club that is inclusive to all genders and levels of experience (you don't even have to be affiliated with the university to join!), and we welcome enquiries from those with a disability regarding the accessibility of the sport. We regularly send teams to national and student competitions, with the club boasting several semi-professional players.
We often also run sessions of Underwater Rugby, another team sport involving a negatively buoyant ball rather than puck and sticks. This sport originated in Germany, where it was again used in fitness training programmes for sub-aqua divers. However, there is very little in common with rugby football (apart from the name) - with points won on delivering the ball into hoops at either end of the pool.
Everyone is welcome to come along to our sessions, regardless of any previous experience. All are encouraged to give these crazy sports a go - so don't hesitate to get in touch!
