What is Fencing? Fencing is a combat sport consisting of three blade weapons: foil, sabre and épée. It is one of only four sports that have featured at every modern Olympic Games. Fencing is a fast and dynamic sport which calls for a combination of excellent footwork as well as precise and controlled blade work. We are inclusive to all genders and levels of experience, and we welcome any enquiries including those about accessibility arrangements.
Our Club | Oxford University Fencing Club
Founded in 1891, OUFC is one of Britain’s oldest and most successful fencing clubs. The club caters for all levels, from beginners to professional student-athletes.
Training for all three weapons, foil, épée and sabre, are offered at the club. The advanced and intermediate fencers receive individual lessons from our club coaches, Pawel Osmanski (Foil/Épée) and Aleksander Lilov (Sabre/Epee). In addition, there are footwork sessions as well as two weekly training sessions for fencers to spar with each other. The quality of fencing is high across all three weapons, with many members representing their country internationally. The club also welcomes fencers who are non-university members to attend these training sessions.
The highlight of the season for the squad is the annual Varsity match against Cambridge. This year, the match will be held in Cambridge. The club has four teams (Men’s Firsts; Women’s Firsts; Men’s Seconds; Women’s Seconds) that compete in regular BUCS competitions. The first teams are known as Blues, second teams as Assassins. Besides Varsity and BUCS, fencers also compete individually in domestic and international competitions.
For those who have never been exposed to fencing before but would like to start picking the sport up, OUFC is the place for you. Besides our prestigious reputation as a Tier 1 University Sport, the club also offers a flourishing beginners' programme for people new to fencing. Our beginners are guided by BFA-qualified coaches during weekly training sessions catered specifically for them, to help them build a solid foundation in fencing. Beginner fencers work towards the annual Novice Varsity match, which will take place in Trinity Term. This gives beginners the opportunity to fence competitively and experience a match against our arch rival, Cambridge.
Outside of training, there is an active social side to OUFC. Look forward to our highlights which include Freshers' Drinks, Christmas Dinner, Old Blues’ Dinner, BBQ/Picnic and many more crewdates and pub crawls, where you get to mingle with fencers from different weapons and skill levels. We look forward to welcoming you into our big family!
