Dance

Dancing shoes of all different varieties laid out on a stone step

There are two recognised sports clubs for dance as an activity. They are OU Dancesport Club and OU Competition Dance Club. This page will summarise which dance styles fit within each club.

Dancesport includes any type of dance that has an internationally recognised competitive structure and that has adopted a sports-based culture. This specifically includes but is not limited to the disciplines of Ballroom (modern), Latin, Salsa, Hip Hop, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Argentine Tango, Disco/Freestyle and Oldtime or Modern sequence. Dancesport is inclusive of all genders and levels of experience, and we welcome enquiries from those with a disability regarding the accessibility of Dancesport.

Competition Dance has opportunities to train, choreograph and perform in a range of forms of dance, including tap, ballet and street. Competition Dance is inclusive to all genders and levels of experience, and we welcome enquiries from those with a disability regarding the accessibility of Competition Dance.

Our Clubs

The OU Dancesport Club offers Social Dancing, Competition Classes, and Exhibition lessons in a range of partner dance styles. The club offers classes in Ballroom, Latin American, Salsa, Bachata, Swing, Rock and Roll, Zumba and Argentine Tango. If you are looking for partner dancing in Oxford, OUDC is the place for you.

Our classes are taught by professional coaches and cater for everyone from complete beginners to experienced competitive dancers. You do not need to bring a partner or wear special shoes. Staff and non-members of the university are welcome.

OUDC is the only Full Blues Dance Club at the University of Oxford, and the Club’s hugely successful Dancesport Competitive Teams represent us at multiple inter-university competitions each term, including the nationals in Blackpool and the annual varsity match against Cambridge. We give exhibition performances at Balls in Oxford and London, and we even have our own dance studio - available 24 hours a day! If you are interested in competitive dancing, or booking us for a demonstration, email the president (president@oudancesport.co.uk) for more information.

Inter-College | Cuppers

Cuppers is an inter-college team match for beginners and experienced dancers alike.

The rules of the competition require that at least one member of each partnership must be an ‘inexperienced dancer’. Hence, the success of a college depends as much on the beginners it recruits as on its established dancers.

Colleges enter teams of four couples. Each couple performs one of four dances: waltz, quickstep, cha and jive. The highest scoring team wins the Acheson Shield. The College with the most points overall takes home the Rob Stevens Memorial Cup.

Cuppers provides a unique opportunity for complete beginners to have a go at competitive ballroom or latin dancing. For many it marks the start of a life-long love affair with the sport.

To get involved please email the club through the links above.

Oxford University Competition Dance (OUCD) Club are Oxford's leading dance performers in a variety of styles. We train in Ballet, Jazz, Hiphop, Contemporary, Tap, Lyrical and Heels, preparing routines to compete at our annual Varsity Match against Cambridge, and other multi-university competitions. We also produce an annual sell out Showcase, and regularly perform at college balls and events. A highlight of 2022 was performing at the Oxford Polo Ball in the atrium of the Natural History Museum in London, and in 2024, OUCD won best overall university at Loughborough dance competition!

There are many opportunities for members to choreograph routines, and get involved in the dance styles you like. We are a fun and close-knit team, meeting multiple times per week for training and socials.

If you are interested in joining us, check out our website and linked social medias, or email us using the link below. Look out for us at the Freshers Fair - we hold annual auditions in October.
