Dance

Dancing shoes of all different varieties laid out on a stone step

There are two recognised sports clubs for dance as an activity. They are OU Dancesport Club and OU Competition Dance Club. This page will summarise which dance styles fit within each club.

Dancesport denotes competitive ballroom dancing, as contrasted to social or exhibition dancing. Our club offers classes in a number of other dance styles including Latin American, Salsa, Acrobatic Rock and Roll, Zumba and Argentine Tango dancing. Dancesport is inclusive to all genders and levels of experience, and we welcome enquiries from those with a disability regarding the accessibility of Dancesport.

Competition Dance has opportunities to train, choreograph and perform in a range of forms of dance, including tap, ballet and street. Competition Dance is inclusive to all genders and levels of experience, and we welcome enquiries from those with a disability regarding the accessibility of Competition Dance.

Oxford University Dancesport Club offers classes in Ballroom, Latin American, Salsa, Acrobatic Rock and Roll, Zumba and Argentine Tango dancing.

Our classes are taught by professional coaches and cater for everyone from complete beginners to experienced competitive dancers. You do not need to bring a partner or wear special shoes. Non-members of the university are welcome.

The Club’s three hugely successful competitive teams for Dancesport, Dancesport Beginners, and Acrobatic Rock and Roll represent us at inter-university competitions including the annual varsity match against Cambridge. If you are interested in competitive dancing, email the president for more information.

Inter-College | Cuppers

Cuppers is an inter-college team match for beginners and experienced dancers alike.

The rules of the competition require that at least one member of each partnership must be an ‘inexperienced dancer’. Hence, the success of a college depends as much on the beginners it recruits as on its established dancers.

Colleges enter teams of four couples. Each couple performs one of four dances: waltz, quickstep, cha and jive. The highest scoring team wins the Acheson Shield. The College with the most points overall takes home the Rob Stevens Memorial Cup.

Cuppers provides a unique opportunity for complete beginners to have a go at competitive ballroom or latin dancing. For many it marks the start of a life-long love affair with the sport.

To get involved please email the club through the links above.

Oxford University Competition Dance (OUCD) Club are Oxford's leading dance performers in a variety of styles. We train in Ballet, Jazz, Hiphop, Contemporary, Tap, Lyrical and Heels, preparing routines to compete at our annual Varsity Match against Cambridge, and other multi-university competitions. We also produce an annual sell out Showcase, and regularly perform at college balls and events. A highlight of 2022 was performing at the Oxford Polo Ball in the atrium of the Natural History Museum in London!

There are many opportunities for members to choreograph routines, and get involved in the dance styles you like. We are a fun and close-knit team, meeting multiple times per week for training and socials.

If you are interested in joining us, check out our website and linked social medias, or email us using the link below. Look out for us at the Freshers Fair - we hold annual auditions in October.
