Men’s Lightweight Rowing Club

Men’s Lightweight Rowing

OULRC is the men’s lightweight rowing program at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1975, the Club represents Oxford each year in the Lightweight Boat Race held in the prestigious rowing venue of Henley-on-Thames, widely regarded as the spiritual home of rowing. The Club also races in national and international races beyond the Boat Race, including the Fours and Eights Head of the River Races, the British Universities Championships, Henley Royal Regatta and invitational exhibition events in Europe and beyond.

The squad is recruited and developed from both undergraduates and graduates at the University, spanning the breadth of rowing experience, courses and colleges. All members balance the commitments of training with the academic pressure of full time courses. The squad trains on the river Thames at Wallingford, a short drive away from Oxford. We are very lucky to share the brand new, world class, Fleming Boat House with OUBC and row in a fleet comprising Filippi and Resolute VIIIs, along with assorted small boats.

Members of OULRC have gone on to be selected for national teams, most notably Paul Mattick (Nephthys 2003) who won gold in the GB Men’s Lightweight Coxless Four at the World Championships in Munich in 2007 and competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The Club maintains strong links with its alumni, with an active Old Members Association who provide generous support, both vocal and material to the squad each year.

We are interested in hearing from anyone at Oxford or thinking of applying who has rowed before, is under 85kg, and wants to train at the highest level. In Oxford, lightweight is defined for men as a crew average of no more than 70kg (max individual 72.5kg). This is the competition requirement and entry into a lightweight squad may be above this weight. Nutrition advice is available through all squads.

Varsity: OULRC compete against Cambridge at Henley-on-Thames as part of the “Henley Boat Races”. The course runs for 2km downstream from the Royal Regatta Finish to half-way down Temple Island.
