The 2015 Rugby Fives Varsity match was a rather one-sided affair: the Cambridge squad ranked first in the world, boasting 6 top 50 ranked players to Oxford’s none. Despite this, throughout the match the Oxford side excelled themselves, stealing 4 points in the singles, before playing some first class fives in the doubles. Though often matching Cambridge in the rallies, the Dark Blues struggled to convert rallies to points when it mattered against the highly ranked Light Blues.
The Beavers vs Sparrows match was a closer run affair, but once again it was Cambridge’s superior experience and depth of talent that gave them a slight edge, and ultimately the win. However, the fact that half of Oxford’s Varsity squad were playing in their first Varsity match, the club has no doubt that Oxford will be able to build upon these encouraging results in the coming years.
This year also saw the first ever women’s fixture at a Varsity match. The Oxford pair were dominant from the start, dispatching the Cambridge pair at a cost of just 2 points across the singles and doubles. Hopefully this will be the first of many ladies’ fixtures, with multiple pairs, and more keenly contested matches to come.
Oxford 23 – 300 Cambridge
Oxford Beavers 86 – 151 Cambridge Sparrows
