This November Kristof, a third year biochemist and exceptionally talented gymnast, travelled from Oxford to Bulgaria, to compete in the 29th FIG Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships in Sofia.
He qualified for the individual finals (top eight) in the top spot ahead of the 2009 world champion from Russia in 2nd, with the Chinese 2013 World Games champion also qualifying.
You can admire Kirstof’s two runs in the final below:
He was the very last to compete on Sunday, having the best score in qualification.
“After my first run I was still the leader so I had the possibility to play safer on the final run,” Kristof explains. “I landed this to finish in first overall and become World Champion in tumbling.”
Kristof is the first male from Great Britain ever to hold the world tumbling title.
Kristof also qualified for the team finals, where the best three from each country do one pass, and he helped Great Britain win the bronze medal – their first team medal in ten years.
“The achievement of actually winning what I have spent years battling in the gym towards feels completely unreal and still a bit of a dream,” said Kristof.
“It has however made me feel more determined now to get back to training to try and achieve even more of my goals. Hopefully I can go on to try and win even more titles and break further ground in the sport.”
Earlier this year, in July, Kristof became the first male tumbler to win the senior British championships four times in a row – a particularly impressive achievement considering he was still aged only 19.
He also competed in the 2013 World Games in Colombia, a multi-sport event similar to the Olympics for non-Olympic sports, occurring every four years, and took the bronze medal. In the previous 2011 World Championships, which took place during his first year at College, Kristof finished in fourth place.
Congratulations to Kristof on his latest achievement and we wish him all the best for continued success in the future!
