The first university Varsity handball matches were held on 25th January 2014 at the Sporthouse in Barking.
- Oxford Men 32 – 26 Cambridge Men
- Oxford Women 12 – 23 Cambridge Women
- Both teams have qualified for the University National Finals in March. Men are defending their 2013 University national Championship
Inaugural Handball Varsity Matches
Cambridge University HC was only founded in 2013 and given that the club is less than a year old, they fielded two very competitive teams in the matches jointly organised by the two clubs.
In the women’s match, Oxford had a tough time against a very strong Cambridge side and, unfortunately, lost their match with a final score of 12-23.
Cambridge had a very strong men’s team. Four of their players also star for the Cambridge city club which competes in the Super 8 League, the premier national competition for handball clubs in the UK.
The Oxford side took an early lead which they were able to hold until the end of the match, resulting in the first ever handball varsity victory for Oxford!
The matches were followed by a joint dinner, with both sides having a victory to celebrate!
Despite the SportHouse being a great venue for handball it is planned that from next year on the varsity match will be held at either Oxford or Cambridge in order to attract more supporters.
National University Championships Qualification
Last weekend saw Oxford’s men and women play in the Regional Qualifying Round of the National University Championships in Birmingham.
The universities of Coventry, Bangor, Oxford, Loughborough, Cranfield, Warwick, Bedfordshire, Nottingham and Bath were all in attendance vying for qualification.
Both teams played 6 matches, only losing one each.
At the end of the 2-days Oxford Men and Women both finished in 2nd position and qualify for the national finals in London this March.
