An appeal letter from Sir Roger Bannister (right on the picture above) has helped to raise more than £80,000 towards the new Indoor Sports Centre at the University of Oxford. The money has been donated from almost 200 donors from around the world.

Sir Roger, who is the Patron of the Appeal for the new Sports Centre, commented:

“I am delighted with the response so far. On behalf of University Sport at Oxford, I would like to say how very grateful I am for the tremendous support from so many alumni.”

“Such generosity will help to ensure that sport continues to flourish at Oxford and that future generations will benefit from having access to top-quality indoor facilities.”

“However, there is still much to be done and so I would encourage all Oxford’s sportsmen and women to spread the word about the project and, if they haven’t yet supported it, would ask them to consider doing so.”

The new Sports Centre will be built at Iffley Road, the world famous site where Sir Roger made history over 60 years ago when he became the first person to run the mile in under 4 minutes.
