Oxford’s Modern Pentathletes once again showed their dominance by retaining the BUCS team title and Men’s Individual last weekend.

In a repeat of their 2013 success, the team of Tommy Lees (Christchurch), Alex Fraser (Queen’s) and Dan Fox (Magdalen) topped the podium ahead of rivals Edinburgh and Cambridge.

The teams score of 14596 surpassed that of their closest Edinburgh (13594) by over 1000pts. OUMPA performed well overall with teams placing 1st, 4th, 5th and 13th. Our top placed women’s team Oxford D came 4th containing Saskia Greenhalgh, Katie Hickson and Anna Coenen-Stas.

With Fox being eliminated from Friday’s show-jumping phase, the team had to dig deep in the remaining four events across the weekend to claw themselves back to the top.

The team made the most of the home advantage and all three performed strongly in the exciting combined run/shoot phase around the Sir Roger Bannister running track.

The fencing saw an equally strong showing by the Oxford boys with Lees and Fraser scoring 968 points each, meaning they individually were now 1st and 2nd places respectively. This narrowed the gap on the Edinburgh team to less than 100pts.

Lees swam the fastest time of the day (2.01.00) to cement his position as BUCS Student Champion for the second year in succession with 5608 points, surpassing his record score of 2013 by 8pts!

The close swimming rivalry of teammates Fox and Fraser continued again as Fox went faster by 0.29 seconds in 2.09.59. Their quick pace in the pool demonstrated Oxford’s superiority in the event as they finished over 1000pts ahead of the second place team.

“I’m really pleased with the team’s result today. Not just from us three but from the whole squad. We had 16 competitors today in the men’s and women’s events and all of them gave it everything.

There’s still some things we need to work on ahead of varsity in 3 weeks time but this is a good benchmark for us.”

– Dan Fox, OUMPA President

Oxford pentathletes are next in action at The Ernst & Young Modern Pentathlon Varsity match, which takes place at Tonbridge School, Kent, on April 4th and 5th 2014.
