Judo Paralympian Awards Oxford’s Blues

350 of Oxford’s finest athletes, all of whom competed in a Varsity Match against Cambridge this year, came together on Tuesday evening to be awarded their Full Blue, Half Blue and Colours certificates at ‘The 2014 Blues Presentation Evening’.

A ‘Blue’ is far too valuable and precious for the certificate to just be handed out on the side of a muddy pitch or get it in a college pigeon hole like yesteryear! This event was a chance for student athletes to be presented their hard earned certificate in style, with all the importance that it deserves.

In the setting of the Oxford Union sports men and women from 27 different sports, mingled and shared stories of their sporting success over champagne and canapés.

Blues Evening 2014 Attendees 2The evening first took place three years ago at the Natural History Museum in Oxford, hosted by Atalanta’s Club. At the time the event was only open to sportswomen who had competed in a Varsity Match, gaving them a chance to gain recognition for their achievements amongst their female peers. Last year’s event followed a similar format in that, again, only women were invited.

However, this year Atalanta’s Club and the Women’s Blues Committee teamed together with the Men’s Blues Committee and the Sports Federation to celebrate both men’s and women’s Dark Blue achievements in sport. This meant that the event was bigger than ever, with over 350 sports men and women collecting certificates!

The guest speaker on the night was the extremely inspirational Paralympic Judo player, Ian Rose.

Ian moved the crowd with his story of how sport changed his life, took him from an insecure visually impaired 7 year old to a world class judo wrestler with bags of confidence. Everyone in the room could certainly relate to the fact that sport had changed their lives too.

After the speech each team, led by their captain, was invited up to collect their certificates from Ian – there was an overwhelming sense of pride in the air.

Celebrations continued long into the evening as a well-earned free bar was provided to all who attended.

The Blues Presentation evening will definitely be an annual event, giving a Dark Blue the recognition it deserves!
