We begin this update with some exciting news; the contractors officially broke ground on the new Phase I Sports Centre on 5th September 2016.
However, no sooner had they commenced work on site than they discovered a badger sett and a colony of great crested newts (the latter being an endangered species, protected under EU and UK law).
Consequently, construction of the Acer Nethercott Sports Hall had to be suspended. But the contractors shifted the scheduling slightly so that demolition works could continue in order to make way for the construction of the trackside building elements (i.e. the atrium, café, reception, and The Gallie-Lewis-Dean Gym).
Thankfully, the University has now managed to obtain the necessary licences from Natural England to relocate the badgers and newts. This means that construction can go ahead on the Acer Nethercott Sports Hall itself early in the New Year with only minor delays.
